Smithtown Police Blotter: Money Stolen From Bank Account In ID Theft

ALSO: Debit card used after person loses wallet; and racial slur found on student's desk, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? These are recent incidents reported in the Smithtown area from Nov. 11 through Nov. 17.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Nov. 15: Making graffiti was reported on School Street in St. James at 9:20 a.m. A student found a racial slur on the side of his desk, police said.
  • Nov. 14: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on North Country Road in St. James at 8:57 a.m. A wallet was lost when someone was pulling away from a BP Gas Station, police said. The person who found it used a debit card, police said.
  • Nov. 10: Grand larceny (second-degree: value exceeds $50K), identity theft (first-degree) and unlawful possession of ID (third-degree) were reported on Jefferson Place in Smithtown at 7:13 p.m. Someone received an email from Chase Bank that an account was linked to a Discover card, police said. Money was transferred out of the account and stolen, police said.
