Smithtown Schools Support Local Veterans
Veterans were served food, treated to patriotic songs and poems, and were recognized for their sacrifices for the U.S.
SMITHTOWN, NY — From high school leadership visits to letters from elementary students, the Smithtown Central School District school community "did their best to make local veterans feel appreciated," the district announced.
On Nov. 8, Mills Pond and St. James Elementary schools held special celebrations for veterans. St. James Elementary School Principal, Adam Javidi, held the school’s first "Gratitude Celebration," inviting veterans who are family members, neighbors and friends of students and staff. The veterans were treated to a breakfast courtesy of the school PTA, a visit from the Hofstra University ROTC Color Guard, and songs and poems from students.
At Mills Pond Elementary, Principal Ireen Westrack hosted the second annual, Mills Pond Veterans Parade. The veterans walked down a red carpet with their student relatives, were served a hot breakfast, were serenaded with patriotic songs from students, received thank-you certificates and participated in a parade in front of the school.
