18 Injured By Smoke In Washington Heights Subway Station: NYPD

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Smoke filled the subway station at 191st Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, injuring 18 people on the platform and in the 1 train on Tuesday afternoon, New York City Fire Department officials said.

According to the FDNY, firefighters were called at around 12:50 p.m. for reports of smoke in the station, and 60 firefighters and medics responded to the scene.

Firefighters got the smoke under control at 1:50 p.m., and medics evaluated 18 people for minor injuries so far, authorities said.

The cause of the smoke is being investigated, officials said.
