INWOOD, NY — A popular Inwood bar will host a screening next month for a star-studded blockbuster movie that begins in a watering hole within the Upper Manhattan neighborhood.

Tubby Hook Tavern, at 4946 Broadway (near West 207th Street), will host the movie night at 8 p.m. on Oct. 5.

"You’ve all heard about this movie “The Greatest Beer Run Ever”, based on a true story of our neighborhood Inwood," Tubby Hook wrote in a post about the movie night. "A man's story of leaving New York in 1967 to bring beer to his childhood buddies in the Army while they are fighting in Vietnam."

"The Greatest Beer Run Ever" will open in the United States on Sept. 30, but has already premiered at international film festivals.

The movie tells the story of Inwood native John "Chick" Donohue.

Donohue was sitting in a now long-shuttered Inwood Irish bar called Doc Fiddler's in 1967, which would later become The Red Barrel.

Donohue, an ex-Marine, was at the bar discussing the nearly 30 men the neighborhood already had lost in the Vietnam War, as well as the nonstop anti-war protests going on in Manhattan.

The bartender exclaimed that it was time to show support to the Inwood guys still overseas, adding that it would be a good idea to bring the boys some beer.

Donohue jumped at the idea. Incredibly, he followed through on it.

During the eight-week trip, Donohue ended up successfully delivering beers to Inwood natives Tommy Collins, Kevin McLoone, Rick Duggan and his best friend Bobby Pappas.

Donohue told his story to the world in 2020, when he published a book with the same title.

Donohue and Duggan are still regulars in Inwood, and recently stepped into Tubby Hook Tavern for a drink.

The cast for the upcoming movie is star-studded, with Efron, Russell Crowe, Bill Murray, Will Ropp, Archie Renaux, Kyle Allen, and Ruby Ashbourne all landing parts.
