UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — Out of the total 495 eateries participating in the first NYC Restaurant Week of 2023, and the 395 of which are in Manhattan, just two are located in Washington Heights or Inwood.

This tiny restaurant representation is for an uptown neighborhood of more than 200,000 residents that is home to hundreds of eateries.

By comparison, the Upper West Side has 30 eateries participating in the promotional campaign, and Harlem has 14.

We've Seen This Story Before

The pair of participating Washington Heights and Inwood eateries for the upcoming NYC Restaurant Week comes two years after Upper Manhattan had zero eateries included in the return of the campaign in 2021.

At the time it left many uptowners scratching their heads, but this omission along with reporting by Patch kick started more Upper Manhattan eateries signing up for following renditions of the campaign.

The signups correlated with added uptown outreach, specifically Spanish language outreach, from NYC & Company, which oversees the NYC Restaurant Week.

This outreach culminated in 11 Washington Heights and Inwood eateries participating in the 2022 summer rendition of NYC Restaurant Week.

Restaurants aren't selected by any sort of governing body. Instead, restaurant owners have to sign their own eateries up to take part in the week.

While data from past years show that eateries make added profit during the period due to the additional advertisement even with the discounted prices, there is still some question over the fixed-menu pricing.

Jeff Garcia, president of the New York State Latino Restaurant Bar & Lounge Association told Patch previously that many Upper Manhattan eateries chose not to participate since the set prices still ranged pricier than normal menu options.

The winter 2023 version of the campaign features a trio of pricing options at $35, $45, and $60, which restaurants may offer during meal periods of their choosing (lunch, dinner or both).
