Quogue Photographer Releases New Book

Dana Buckley, a photographer who has made her home in Quogue for over five years, has released her second fine art book, called Dana Buckley: Living Desert.

Buckey said her new book, which was released on Jan. 23, aims to capture the plant life, including cactuses, agaves, aloes and shrubs, that have thrived in the most rugged conditions.

To capture the images, Buckey said she traveled to some of the nation's most undiscovered terrain, including the Arazona-Sonaro Desert, Borrego Springs, Huntington Gardens, San Marino, the Joshua Tree National Park, the Palm Desert and Lotusland.

"To me, the dryness of the desert has a certain resonance with the cement and stone of New York City, while the Desert's mountain backdrop is reminiscent of the jagged skyline, said Buckley, who added that photographing the book took a "new kind of patience."

"Rather than trying to alter the environment to get the shot I wanted, I yielded to its might and majesty," said Bukley, who is a six-time winner of the excellence in photography award from Art Direction magazine.

Buckley has been shooting stills for more than three decades and whenever she is in Quogue, she says she looks to capture the images of a village that she has grown to love.

"I love that Quogue doesn't have the hustle and bustle of the Hamptons," she said. "Quogue is a treasure that many have not discovered."

And when in the area, she said you can find her walking down Dune Road or eating lobster at Docker's and watching the sunset.
