Summer Camp Exhibition; Personal Shrines at Library; Create Clay Bowls for Hunger

Here are five things you need to know Jan. 18 to Jan. 20.

1. Summer Camp Exhibition

The summer camp exhibition will be held on Jan. 31 at the Mildred E. Strang Middle School cafeteria from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. More than 30 different summer camp programs will be present to meet local families and answer questions.

Several Yorktown natives have been named to the Deans' List for the fall semester at SUNY Oswego. Showing academic achievement are:

Michael Buono, senior (history).

Jordan Chamoff, a senior (global and international studies).

The President's and Deans' lists represent the academic top 25.9 percent of the Oswego student body. To be included on the Deans' List, students must have a semester grade average of 3.30 to 3.79.

3. Paper Arts & Mixed Media – Personal Shrines

The workshop at the John C. Hart Memorial Library will be led by Lavinia Wiggins on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 12 p.m. A personal shrine is an enclosure for displaying objects of personal significance, creating a space that indicates a higher meaning than the objects themselves. It can be about anything that interests you. A person, remembrance, emotion, idea, milestone or celebration. Participants will use several collage techniques to decorate our box and fill it with relevant items. Image transfer options and the introduction of mica will be discussed.

4. Defensive Driving Course Offered in Cortlandt this Weekend

A  6-hour defensive driving course is being offered Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Columbanus Church, 122 Oregon Rd. in Cortlandt Manor. The course will take place at Dillon Hall, the back of the church grounds. The course Costs $40. Register by calling 917-509-7704 or emailing NYPDPEPE@aol.com

5. Create Clay Bowls for Hunger

Come and fight hunger with a creative clay project at The Peekskill Clay Studios at The Hat Factory on Jan. 19. Volunteers, ages 8 and up with an adult, are invited to work with an artist to make handcrafted bowls.The bowls will then be given to local organizations who feed the hungry. This creative, fun, and family-orientated activity is part of the Empty Bowls Project, an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. Shifts start at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Check here for more info.
