Yorktown Says Problems With Garbage Collection Are Resolved
The new vendor — Competitive Carting — will be at Tuesday's Town Board meeting.
YORKTOWN, NY — The rollout of a new garbage collection service in the town of Yorktown got off to a shaky start, and the contractor will appear at Tuesday’s town board meeting to talk about it.
Yorktown officials said many town residents experienced a disruption in their normal garbage and recycling collections over the past week.
Officials said they have successfully worked the Competitive Carting to resolve the issues and are confident the situation is being addressed and resolved, according to a town spokesperson.

As of Monday, most homes have had a pickup after Competitive Carting worked through the weekend to catch up.
Deputy Supervisor Tom Diana said the town expected all collections to be back to normal with the start of a new weekly cycle.

“If your refuse has not [been] picked up by the end of your normal collection day, leave it on the curb,” he said. “To catch up, Competitive Carting’s crews have been working into the evening and may come by your home at a later hour than is typical.”
Diana added that, if by the next morning the trash is still on the curb, residents should call the company at 914-477-5865 or leave them a message on its website.
The situation was the result, according to officials, because the vendor was changed on Jan. 1 and it’s not unusual for there to be glitches as drivers and crews learn new routes and the learning curve was compounded by back-to-back four-day holiday weeks.
“We recognize that last week’s disruptions were inconvenient and inconsistent with the level of service our residents expect and deserve,” Diana said.
He said there have also been reports of crews comingling garbage with recycling and that has been reported to Competitive Carting as unacceptable.
Representatives from Competitive Carting will be at the Town Board meeting Tuesday to discuss the situation.
Residents are encouraged to watch the meeting on the town’s website or on public access television.
