3 North Carolina Hospitals Rank Among America's Best

A new ranking by Healthgrades evaluates the top 50, 100 and 250 hospitals in the United States. Here's how North Carolina hospitals ranked.

NORTH CAROLINA — North Carolina is home to some of the best hospitals in the country, according to a new 2022 ratings released by Healthgrades Tuesday.

Healthgrades, a leading website Americans use to find care, ranked 2022's top 50, 100, and 250 best hospitals, recognizing the top one, two, and five percent of hospitals in the country for clinical excellence.

"It is crucial to know the top-performing hospitals in your community and look to these centers of clinical excellence to support you and your family's health long-term," Burt Kann, EVP and head of product at Healthgrades said in a news release. "Many individuals choose a specialist without considering the quality of the hospital where that doctor treats patients. These questions need to be asked, and Healthgrades has the answers."

A recent Healthgrades survey revealed that only 22 percent of U.S. adults reported that they considered hospital quality the last time they selected a specialist. By offering easy access to data-driven hospital ratings, Healthgrades said it hopes to connect consumers with the providers and hospitals who are right for their care needs.

According to the website, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals achieving Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospitals Award on average, 160,256 lives could potentially have been saved.

Jason Bernd, president and chief operating officer Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, says it was quite the honor to receive.

"Novant Health Matthews Medical Center is proud to be included on Healthgrades’ 100 Best Hospitals List," Bernd told Patch. "Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have remained committed to providing safe, quality care and our teams work together every day to find ways to make the healthcare experience better for all patients."

To compile the rankings, Healthgrades analyzed the clinical performance of nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide across more than 31 of the most common procedures and conditions. It does not take into consideration perception or popularity in analyzing and rating hospitals.

To measure performance and evaluate hospitals for overall clinical excellence, Healthgrades used Medicare inpatient data from the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) file purchased from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for years 2018 through 2020.

Patient outcomes data for 31 conditions or procedures were analyzed for virtually every hospital in the country. These conditions and procedures include things such as heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.
