31-Year-Old Inmate Dies In Mecklenburg County Detention Center

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 31-year-old female inmate who was incarcerated in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center at 801 E. Fourth Street. She has now been identified as Francine Laney.

After 6:20 p.m., Laney was found unresponsive in her cell at the infirmary, and medical personnel began administering CPR. By 6:36, the sheriff's office says paramedics arrived and tried an IV and an automatic external defibrillator to save her. She did not recover, and was pronounced dead.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office refers to inmates as residents.

“Words can not express the devastation of losing a resident so soon after the shooting involving one of our deputes and now the emotional trauma on staff. We are deeply saddened to report this death," said Sheriff Garry McFadden.

Laney was processed into custody at the Mecklenburg County Detenton Center-Central on Sunday, January 30, 2022.
