Cam Newton To Ink Deal With New England Patriots: Report

Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is reportedly signing a $7.5 million one-year deal with the New England Patriots.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Former Carolina Panther MVP quarterback Cam Newton is no longer a free agent. He and the New England Patriots have agreed to a one-year contract, ESPN reported Sunday night.

"I'm excited as I don't know what right now!" Newton said in an Instagram post Sunday evening alluding to the $7.5 million deal, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Newton, 31, had been the star quarterback of the Carolina Panthers since 2011. Carolina moved on from him this off season after injuries hampered him.

Newton was one of the league's dominant dual-threat quarterbacks until those recent injuries. He has thrown for 182 touchdowns and run for 58 more in his career.

The Patriots hope he'll regain some of that explosiveness as he joins a group of quarterbacks trying to replace Tom Brady. Newton will compete with youngster Jarrett Stidham and journeyman Brian Hoyer.

The upcoming season will bring a nearly all-new roster of quarterbacks for the Panthers. Quarterback Will Grier will begin his second season with the team, alongside Teddy Bridgewater, formerly of New Orleans and P.J. Walker, formerly of Temple University, the Observer said.
