Charlotte Independence Unveil Breast Cancer Awareness Kit

Fans can bid on the jerseys in an online auction, with proceeds benefitting the Novant Health Cancer Institute Buddy Kemp Support Center.

CHARLOTTE, NC —The Charlotte Independence soccer team on Monday unveiled a pink, grey and black third kit that was inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the team said.

According to the team, which plays in the USL Championship, the uniform will be worn during the Oct. 16 home match against the Charleston Battery at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The game kicks off at 7 p.m., and it will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Novant Health.

The pink jerseys currently are available through an online auction. The auction will close Oct. 17 and all proceeds will benefit the Novant Health Cancer Institute Buddy Kemp Support Center.

"We're proud to partner with Novant Health to drive awareness and raise funds to help comfort members of our community that face this battle against cancer," said Tim Schuldt, president and COO of the Charlotte Independence.

Throughout the month of October, according to a release, the Charlotte Independence are aiming to increase awareness and encourage early detection mammograms, and the team is inviting patients and survivors from the Novant Cancer Institute, and beyond, to attend the Oct. 16 match.

The Novant Health Cancer Institute Buddy Kemp Support Center is designed to help patients and their families cope with cancer, providing a comfortable home-like setting, counseling services and a boutique with wigs for patients who have lost their hair from chemotherapy treatments.

"Novant Health is honored that the Charlotte Independence will be supporting the Novant Health Cancer Institute and Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center through the sales of their Breast Cancer Awareness kit," said Barbara LiPira, senior director of the Novant Health Cancer Institute. "Right now, our greatest need is transportation funds for patients and every little bit helps."

Entering Wednesday night's home game against Miami FC (kickoff at 7 p.m.) the Charlotte Independence have 11 wins, eight losses and four ties for 37 points, putting them fourth in the eight-team Eastern Conference Atlantic Division.

Tickets for Wednesday's contest and the four remaining home games after that, including the Oct. 16 Breast Cancer Awareness Night contest, are available on the Independence website.
