Hurricane Sally: Flash Flood Watch Begins Thursday In NC

Much of North Carolina will receive up to 6 inches of rain from the remnants of Hurricane Sally, according to forecasters.

CHARLOTTE, NC — As Hurricane Sally made landfall along the Gulf Coast Wednesday, the North Carolina was on alert for the impact of the storm's remnants, which are expected to dump up to 6 inches of rain in parts of the state by the weekend.

A flash flood watch for much of the greater Charlotte metro area will go into effect Thursday, Sept. 17 at 8 a.m. through Friday morning, the National Weather Service said.

"Widespread heavy rain showers and a few thunderstorms are expected to develop across the watch area beginning late tonight, continuing through much of Thursday before tapering off late Thursday night," NWS said in a hazardous weather bulletin. "Storm total rainfall of 4 to 6 inches is expected across much of the Watch area over a 24 to 30 hour period."

"Forecast uncertainty remains higher than normal, but there is confidence that portions of NC will receive heavy rainfall from the remnants of Sally Thursday through Friday," North Carolina Emergency Management said Wednesday morning. A large portion of the state will receive 3-6 inches of rain, with some local rainfall amounts up to 9 inches "where the heaviest rains set up," the agency said.
