NC Man, Charged In Deadly FL Carjacking, Has Criminal History

According to police, he robbed a bank and carjacked a man at gun point. The man was later found dead.

VALRICO, FL — A North Carolina man accused of robbing a bank and carjacking a man in Florida has a history of violence, according to reports. James Hanson, 39, is being questioned by police in connection with the robbery that left the carjacking victim dead.

Mathew Korattiyil, 68, was in a Lexus SUV in the parking lot of CenterState Bank, 1815 State Road 60 in Valrico, Florida, around 10:30 a.m. when deputies said Hanson robbed the bank and then carjacked Korattiyil at gunpoint.

The body was discovered by deputies behind a community center shortly before 4 p.m. The center is less than five minutes from CenterState Bank where he was carjacked. The sheriff's office hasn't yet given details on the cause of death.

Deputies later located and pursued the Lexus, which hit another vehicle and overturned. Hanson tried to run away but was apprehended by deputies.

According to an ABC News report, Hanson faces North Carolina charges as well, including robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of stolen goods and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

The outlet reported Hanson was convicted in 2003 of armed robbery and sentenced to life in prison, but was released after 16 years after an appeal.
