Police Identify Driver Killed Following Single-Car Crash

The 29-year-old driver veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree in the median, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Excessive speed and alcohol use are suspected to be contributing factors in a single-car crash that led to the death of a 29-year-old man, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Monday.

The crash occurred Thursday, March 18, shortly before 9 p.m. in the 10900 block of Westlake Drive.

First responders at the scene found one occupant in the vehicle — driver Xavier Simmons, 29. According to a police account, the 2006 Toyota Avalon that Simmons was driving veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree in the median. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, police said.

Monday, Simmons succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, CMPD said.

A preliminary investigation into the crash found that Simmons was traveling southwest on Westlake Drive at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and struck a tree, CMPD said.

CMPD said its Major Crash Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation, which remains active and ongoing. CMPD said anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
