Police Seeking Leads After 2 Children Shot While Playing

The children were playing with a pet rabbit on an apartment balcony when they were struck by gunfire, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte police are asking the community for leads after two children were hit by gunfire Monday evening while playing with a pet rabbit on an apartment balcony.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at the Sharon Pointe Apartments, located in the 3200 block of Amity Pointe Road in Charlotte.

According to a police report, an 11-year-old boy was shot and transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. A 5-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet, and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"Detectives continue to investigate this case and determined at least two apartments had been struck by gunfire," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement. "The two juvenile victims were playing with a pet rabbit on the balcony of one apartment when they were struck by gunfire. The preliminary information indicates the children were not the intended targets, but were rather struck by projectiles from a series of nearby gunfire."

CMPD said that anyone with information about this shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tips may be submitted anonymously.
