CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte and Lake Norman area are under a winter weather advisory Friday from 7 p.m. until Saturday at 7 a.m., per the National Weather Service.

Rain is likely before 9 p.m., then it's expected to mix with rain and snow before 11 p.m. After 11, expect snow. The low will be around 26 degrees, and colder in some areas with higher elevation.

Wind gusts will make things extra chilly and could be as high as 25 mph.

This time, one to three inches of snow is expected in the region. In the mountains, more than four inches could fall.

WCNC Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich cautions drivers that roads Saturday morning are likely to be slick.

Saturday night into Sunday, bitter cold will descend upon the Queen City and Lake Norman, with a low projected at 19 degrees, and even colder in some areas.

The NWS recommends people bring in their pets and plants and protect their pipes before Friday night.

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving, the National Weather Service said.

Here's the latest weekend forecast:

Friday: A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly after 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 49. Light south southwest wind. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Rain likely before 9pm, then rain and snow likely between 9pm and 11pm, then snow likely after 11pm. Cloudy, with a low around 26. North northwest wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Saturday: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 35. Northwest wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 19. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 45. Calm wind becoming south southwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 26.
