Strong Storms Prompt Flood Advisory For Charlotte Metro

A line of slow-moving storms over the Charlotte metro prompted a NWS warning that heavy rain could flood urban and small streams.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A line of strong, slow-moving thunderstorms over the Charlotte metro could overwhelm urban and small streams Monday evening, leading to flooding, National Weather Service Monday afternoon. The advisory will be in effect until 8:15 p.m.

Charlotte metro locations that could experience flooding include The Plaza, Hidden Valley, Freedom Park, University City, Southpark Mall, Reedy Creek Park, Paw Creek and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, NWS said.

Heavy rain pummeled the region Monday afternoon, with 1 to 2 inches of rain falling in the metro, forecasters said when issuing the advisory.

"Heavy runoff is already occurring near the upper reaches of Irwin Creek, and Little Sugar Creek, and as this runoff flows downstream low-lying areas near Little Sugar Creek may flood near Uptown and eventually areas further south along the creek," NWS said. "Mallard Creek will also receive some of the heavy runoff and minor flooding may develop along it this evening."
