Teen On Boogie Board Saves Mom, Boy From Atlantic Ocean Current

NORTH CAROLINA — A teenager on a boogie board who noticed a mother and son struggling to swim off the shore of an Atlantic Ocean beach in North Carolina recently is credited with saving their lives.

Travis Shrout of Stow, Ohio, was boogie boarding in the ocean while on vacation with his family when he heard the mother yell for help, according to a WKYC report.

A current had pulled the mom and 10-year-old boy out farther into the ocean when they were already 50 yards out, according to the report.

Shrout passed his board to the mother, and swam to rescue the boy. The boy's head was bobbing in and out of the water as he struggled, video of the rescue shows.

Shrout, a former lifeguard, helped both make it back to shore.

"There were a couple of times when a couple waves came over our heads and kind of submerged us,” Shrout told WKYC. “They weren’t really big waves, it was just not something you want to be facing when you’re trying to get two people in.”

Grecia Shrout, Travis’ mother, said she’s “very proud” of her son’s heroic actions.

“It was kind of scary watching it happen,” she told WKYC.
