CHARLOTTE, NC — There are hundreds of "Vigil for Democracy" events around the country, some in-person, some online and some to register new voters.

In Charlotte, the event is online only using Zoom, and will take place at 6 p.m. on Jan. 6.

Event organizers explain the event as time to take a stand following the capitol insurrection in 2021.

On Jan 6, 2021, a mob of President Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress met to certify President-Elect Joe Biden's electoral victory. Five people died either before, during or shortly after the event, including one person shot by Capitol police, another from a drug overdose and three who perished from natural causes.

"Exactly one year later, Americans across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections," the vigil description reads.
