Marietta is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Marietta has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Marietta was the first settlement in the Northwest Territory and was named in honor of Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France. The city played a significant role in American history, serving as a starting point for pioneers and explorers heading westward.
  • The city is home to the oldest permanent settlement in the state of Ohio, which is the Mound Cemetery. The cemetery features a collection of beautifully preserved 19th-century grave markers and monuments, including the towering obelisk of Rufus Putnam, the founder of the Ohio Company.
  • Marietta has several notable museums, including the Campus Martius Museum, which showcases the history of the region and the Ohio River Museum, which highlights the importance of the Ohio River to the development of the region. Visitors can explore the museums' exhibits and learn about the city's rich cultural heritage.

  • Marietta is located in the heart of the Mid-Ohio Valley Wine Region, which features several wineries and vineyards. Visitors can take a tour and sample locally produced wines at places like Marietta Wine Cellars, located right in the city and the Unicorn Wine Guild, just down the road in Belpre.
