SMITHFIELD, PA — Nine cats were found in a large dog carrier for air travel on a road near the entrance of Walnut Creek Mobile Home Park on Tuesday. At least four of the cats are pregnant, according to Ninth Life Rescue Center, a Westmoreland County shelter.

State police in Uniontown are investigating the abandonment.

The felines "deserve justice and we are going to do everything possible to find who is responsible," a post on the Ninth Life Facebook page stated. "Did you see someone struggling to carry a large dirty white crate in this area? Is there someone you know close by who had a bunch of cats and suddenly doesn't?"
