PITTSBURGH, PA — The Carnegie Science Center is paying homage to the city's old Chinatown section Downtown by adding the Chinatown Inn to the Miniature Railroad & Village, which reopens Saturday after being closed for maintenance.

Chinatown was a small Chinese immigrant community between Second and Third Avenue that included markets, grocery stores, and shops from the mid–19th to early 20th centuries. Today, Chinatown Inn is the only remaining remnant of that community.

To mark the Chinatown Inn's addition to the display, the center on Saturday will hold a Celebrate Chinatown event featuring Lion Dances and martial arts demonstrations along with musical and theatrical acts.

“We are thrilled to reopen the Miniature Railroad & Village and celebrate the legacy of Chinatown on such a special day for the Science Center,” Jason Brown, Henry Buhl, Jr., Director of Carnegie Science Center, said in a statement. “Our close collaboration with the community has been key to the Miniature Railroad tradition, allowing us to highlight local history and share amazing stories from Western Pennsylvania with our visitors."

The Miniature Railroad showcases the region as it was prior to the 1940s with 57 replicas of historic buildings. Every year, a new model is added based on visitor voting.
