Former Pirates Player Killed In Dominican Nightclub Roof Collapse

A former Pittsburgh Pirates player died in the collapse of the roof in a nightclub in the Dominican Republic.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Octavio Dotel, whose impressive baseball career included a stop as the Pirates' closer in 2010, was among at least 58 people killed in the roof collapse early Tuesday at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic. He was 51.

Dotel was pulled from the debris of the Jet Set nightclub but died en route to the hospital, according to the Dominican Republic news service Noticias Sin.

Additionally, Major League Baseball insider Hector Gomez posted on X,"Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel has passed away, after being rescued from the rubble at the Jet Set night club in the Dominican Republic duet o the collapse of the roof."

In addition to those killed, more than 160 people were injured when the roof collapsed, according to multiple reports. Authorities were on the scene Tuesday attempting to locate trapped survivors from the ruins.

Dotel was the Pirates' closer for much of the 2010 season, recording 21 saves before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Dotel played for 13 different teams during his career, which began in 1999 with the New York Mets. In 2011, he helped the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series Championship. He retired as a Detroit Tiger following the 2014 season.
