PITTSBURGH, PA — On airline flights, sexual misconduct, assault, interference with flight crew members and theft are crimes that the FBI investigates. The bureau also investigates instances of violence at airports, interference with airport security screening personnel, and bomb threats in relation to air travel.

That's why the FBI is urging air travelers to be aware when traveling during the holidays.

“We’ve seen record numbers of travelers at airports this year and we expect the holiday season to be no different,” FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek said in a press release. “Extra caution can make all the difference between a disastrous holiday and a safe and enjoyable journey. Plan ahead, stay aware of your surroundings, and prioritize safety to ensure you can make cherished memories with your loved ones this year.”

Sexual assault aboard aircraft is a federal offense; it usually occurs in the form of unwanted touching. FBI investigations show similarities between reported instances of in-flight sexual assaults:

  • Attacks generally occur on long-haul flights.
  • The airplane cabin is usually dark.
  • Victims are often in middle or window seats, sleeping, and covered with a blanket or jacket.

The FBI recommends reporting any incident immediately to the flight crew and ask that they record the attacker’s identity.

The FBI also warns against attempting to get a firearm through an airport security checkpoint. A firearm found at a security checkpoint causes delays for travelers and can result in tens of thousands of dollars in fines and your arrest.

In each of its field offices, the FBI has airport liaison agents assigned to the nearly 450 U.S. aviation facilities that have passenger screening operations regulated by the Transportation Security Administration. Agencs respond to crime aboard aircraft, a violation that falls within the FBI’s special investigative jurisdiction.

If you have been the victim of a crime, or if you have witnessed one take place, the FBI urges you to report it to the flight crew, the nearest law enforcement officer or the bureau.
