Former Pirates World Series Championship Player Dies
A member of a Pirates championship team has died.
PITTSBURGH, PA — He was not as famous as Bill Mazeroski, whose home run in Game Seven won the 1960 World Series. But he was a member of the team.
Bob Oldis, a catcher on that winning World Series team, died on Sept. 21 in Gilbert Ariz. He was 97.
Oldis played for seven teams in an 11-year minor league career. In the Major Leagues, he played for the Washington Senators (1953-55), Pirates (1960-61) and Phillies (1962-63). A third-string catcher on the 1960 championship team, Oldis appeared in two games but didn't get any at-bats, coming in as a ninth-inning defensive replacement.
