Former Pittsburgh City Council Member, PA State Rep. Dies

PITTSBURGH, PA — Barbara Burns, who had a storied career in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania government, died on Wednesday.

Burns, a lifelong resident of the city's North Side, was 76.

Burns was a former president of the Pittsburgh Public Schools and in 1994 became was the first female from Pittsburgh to become a member of the state House. She also was a Pittsburgh city council member from 2000 to 2004.

Most recently, Burns was the proprietor of Sweet Time Cafe on East Ohio Street on the North Side.

Burns was a 1966 graduate of Allegheny High School and earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Chatham College in 1982.
