Longtime Pittsburgh TV Broadcaster Leaves Job

A veteran Pittsburgh broadcaster is leaving his job for health reasons.

PITTSBURGH, PA — WPXI-TV sports director Alby Oxenreiter, who has been off the air for two years after undergoing heart surgery, will not be returning to his position.

Oxenreiter told Triblive on Wednesday that he is keeping his focus on his recovery and is unable to return to his job's rigorous schedule and demands.

In June 2023, WPXI announced that Oxenreiter would be off the air for an extended time following open heart surgery.

Oxenreiter "developed a major blood infection that traveled to his heart," WPXI stated at the time."The surgeon replaced two heart valves, but other complications from the surgery have delayed his recovery."

According to his biography on the station website, Oxrenreiter has been with WPXI since 2006.

A Pittsburgh native, Oxenreiter is a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School. He attended Villanova University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communications.

His career in television began in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was also a sports anchor and reporter in Harrisburg and in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Before arriving at WPXI, Oxenreiter anchored and reported on Pittsburgh sports for both WTAE-TV and WPGH-TV.
