Major Pittsburgh Music Scene Figure Dies: Report

A former major personality in the Pittsburgh music arena has died. Patch provides the details.

PITSBURGH, PA — A pioneer of the Pittsburgh punk scene of the 1970s and 1980s has died.

Judy Zarra, the co-owner of the former Electric Banana in Oakland, died Tuesday of cancer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. She was 78.

She was the co-owner of Zarra's, which was converted from the nightclub to an Italian restaurant. She owned the nightclub, which closed around 1990 and then became a restaurant, with her husband, Johnny.

She affectionately was known by the bands that played at the bar as "Judy Banana."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available Tuesday.
