PITTSBURGH, PA — Hours after Derrick Harmon was selected by the Steelers in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday, his mother died in a Detroit hospital.

Tiffany Saine died shortly after Harmon went to the hospital to tell her about his selection, The Oregonian reported. She had suffered a stroke in 2002 that left her paralyzed on her left side.

Harmon had addressed her medical condition when speaking with reporters shortly after being drafted.

“It was a little bittersweet,” Harmon said about being selected. “My mom wasn’t with me. She’s at the hospital right now on life support. After I get off the phone, I’m going to head straight to the hospital and tell her her son got drafted.”
