Pittsburgh-Area Teen Struck, Killed By Vehicle

A Pittsburgh-area elementary school student died after being hit by a vehicle over the weekend.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The East Allegheny School District is grieving the loss of a Logan Elementary School student who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Saturday.

The district identified the victim at Terrel Byars Jr., a sixth grader at the North Versailles school.

According to West Mifflin Police social media posts, the incident occurred on Kennywood Boulevard at or near the Speedway at around 5 p.m. The heavily traveled road was closed for about four hours.

Further details on the incident were not immediately available from the police department.

However, a social media post confirmed that Terrel was "struck by a car and tragically lost his life."

A release on Sunday stated "Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers during this difficult time.

"We understand that this news will affect many members of our school community, and we are here to support you as you work to comprehend this unimaginable loss. Counselors from Turtle Creek Valley Community Service will be available at Logan Elementary (Monday) and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for grief support. Additional counseling services will be available when school resumes on January 5.

"Counseling and support services are available, and additional supports will be in place when students return. We ask that our community keep the family in your thoughts and respect their privacy as we support one another."
