Pittsburgh Tavern Hit With Consumer Alert

The Allegheny County Health Department issued a consumer alert after inspecting a Pittsburgh saloon on Monday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for Capo's, formerly the Carson City Saloon, on East Carson Street on the South Side.

An inspection Monday revealed a severe accumulation of old debris found on food contact surfaces, including the steam table, the can opener, and work tables. Several food containers in the prep cooler had visible mold growth.

Severe grease accumulation was found on all kitchen equipment utensils and fixtures. A compartment sink was found partially blocked and there was no evidence of sanitizing.

A black, mold-like substance was found in both ice machines. Soda syrups were being stored in an employee restroom.

The water heater was venting inside., creating a carbon monoxide hazard.

A restaurant with a consumer alert placard is allowed to operate for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days. Another inspection is conducted either prior to the expiration of the temporary period upon request of the eatery owner or on the tenth day.
