North Smithfield Woman, 78, Killed In Crash On Route 146 South
The driver of the truck that rear-ended the victim's SUV is facing several charges of reckless driving.
PROVIDENCE, RI — A North Smithfield woman was killed in a crash on Route 146 South in Providence heading into the holiday weekend, the Rhode Island State Police said.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. Friday near the Admiral Street overpass, police said. A white SUV, stopped in traffic, was rear-ended in the high-speed lane by a box truck, which caused a multi-vehicle crash.
The SUV driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while the passenger, 78-year-old Frances Furnell, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The truck driver, 27-year-old Andre Gilbert of Warwick, was charged with driving to endanger/reckless driving, death resulting, and driving to endanger/reckless driving, resulting in serious bodily injury.
