📰 News we're reading

1. Rhode Island Troopers Nab Forger Wanted In PA: Cops (patch.com) — State police say a 32-year-old Maryland man wanted in Pennsylvania on multiple forgery and theft-related charges was caught after a traffic stop on I-195 in East Providence. Troopers processed him at the Lincoln Woods Barracks before taking him to Sixth Division District Court for arraignment, highlighting how an interstate warrant led to an arrest right in the city.

2. 'This is a pretty big gang of folks to construct a building' (eastbayri.com) — A major affordable housing complex is breaking ground in the center of East Providence, eventually bringing 144 income-restricted apartments and on-site support services to Taunton Avenue. Local, state and federal leaders say the City Center Apartments project will target residents facing high rents and homelessness, backed by a complex $47 million financing package and a planned completion of its second phase by early 2027.

3. ‘Traffic is insane': Businesses long for end to Washington Bridge closure (wpri.com) — East Providence businesses like Rosa’s Tavern and Red Bridge Tavern are still feeling real financial pain two years after the abrupt Washington Bridge westbound closure, with reduced customers and cut hours. With demolition just finished and a new bridge not expected until late 2028, traffic backups on I-195 and local streets continue to disrupt commutes, deliveries, and daily routines on both sides of the river.

4. Good Night Lights celebrates 10th anniversary with extended ‘Magic Minute' (wpri.com) — East Providence’s police chief and officers joined other first responders in Providence Thursday night to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Good Night Lights tradition at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, flashing lights toward young patients’ windows. Families like the Kings, whose 3-year-old daughter Ruby is undergoing cancer treatment, say the nightly show of support helps them feel less isolated and more connected to the community.

5. 18 Displaced By Central Falls Fire: Reports (patch.com) — East Providence firefighters were among several area departments that rushed to help battle a Central Falls house fire that displaced 18 people early Wednesday. Everyone, including a dog, escaped safely with no injuries reported, but the Mary Street multifamily home was heavily damaged and residents are now relying on emergency assistance.
