DeCesare To Be Sworn in Next Friday as Chief Sheriff

Johnston Deputy Chief David M. DeCesare will be leaving the force next week to become chief sheriff of RHode Island.

DeCesare will officially sworn in March 8 with the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs, State Police Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell announced Friday. 

The ceremony will take place at the Governor Frank J. Licht Judicial Complex, 7th Floor, 250 Benefit St., Providence, at 12:30 p.m.

DeCesare is a 24-year veteran of the Johnston Police Department, where he has served as deputy chief since June 2009. He has received several commendations, including the Johnston Police Medal of Valor and the Rhode Island American Legion Medal of Valor. He holds a Bachelor's degree in administration of justice from Roger Williams University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

As chief sheriff, he will be responsible for the daily operation, policy implementation and direction of the sheriffs to include the custody, safety, discipline and well-being of prisoners and defendants while being transported to and from the courts and other facilities, and to direct security in the courts and other buildings.
