JOHNSTON, RI — Last year, Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Johnston was devastated by an EF-1 tornado that tore through the area and destroyed 20 gardens and 125 trees.

To help repair the nonprofit, non-denominational garden cemetery, Highland Memorial Park on Wednesday launched the Memorial Tree and Garden Program. This initiative aims to restore the park’s natural beauty following severe damage caused by the tornado that struck the cemetery on Aug. 18, 2023.

The Memorial Tree and Garden Program offers people the opportunity to honor their loved ones while contributing to the restoration of Highland Memorial Park. Participants can select from a variety of tree species, including saplings, which will grow to add new life and beauty to the park’s grounds.

"We’re excited to see Highland Memorial Park come back to life after the tornado’s damage," Highland Memorial Park Cemetery President Joseph Swift said. "Our Memorial Tree and Garden Program is a wonderful way for folks to honor their loved ones and help us restore the park. By choosing a tree or plant, you’re not just adding green to our grounds — you’re helping us heal and keep this place a peaceful spot for everyone."

To participate, people can choose a tree or garden plant and indicate their primary and secondary location preferences within the cemetery for planting. An optional memorial plaque, made from black anodized aluminum with gold lettering, can be added to the base of the tree, dedicating it to the beloved memory of an individual or family. Park officials said they will ensure that each chosen item is planted in the selected location, helping to restore the park’s lush, green landscape.
