Tips for embracing your outdoor space

Michelle Lee Designs, an award-winning boutique interior design firm, shares ideas to create the ultimate outdoor sanctuary

As you bask in the warmth of summer, be sure to embrace your outdoor spaces.

Michelle Lee Designs, an award-winning and published boutique interior design firm based in Rhode Island, shares ideas to create the ultimate outdoor sanctuary.

Michelle recommends introducing vibrant, colorful pots featuring trailing flowers and flower boxes made from recycled pallets. Herb gardens create a delightful culinary addition to the space. Hanging strings of tiny white lights add twinkle and a whimsical touch. Consider recycled pallet couches with brightly colored cushions. Fireplaces or fire pits create visual and physical warmth.

If you have a front porch, Michelle suggests painting the ceiling light blue to accentuate nature’s palette and a new stain color on the floor to freshen the look.

In terms of seating, Michelle likes to be sure there are between six and eight places for guests to relax, perhaps a combination of table seating and comfortable chairs.

As you consider décor, do not feel beholden to beach themes or traditional outdoor motifs. Instead, let your own personality shine through as long as your decorative choices are designed for outdoor exposure. For the most welcoming appearance, keep the outdoor space neat, clean and well-maintained.
