May and Harrison had been fatally shot by the time police arrived at the scene around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Johnston police Chief Mark Vieira said Thursday, according to the Providence Journal.
Officer Scott Hopkins, who was the first to arrive on scene at the two homes, had been headed to the community to issue a no-trespassing order to James Harrison based on an incident that had taken place around midnight Tuesday, Vieira told the Journal Thursday.

As Hopkins arrived, callers told 911 dispatchers about gunshots. Officers then found May's wounded daughter on the front lawn, May in the garage, and Janet Harrison in her home next door, Vieira told the outlet.
May was involved with the Johnston Little League, which confirmed his death in a statement on its Facebook page.
"TJ was a son, husband, father, friend, mentor, coach and most of all, a great human being,” the post read. "We will miss him tremendously. We ask at this time please give TJ’s family their privacy."
Several news outlets reported the shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. on Ligian Court after a "neighbor dispute."
"I can now confirm the suspect has been apprehended and the danger to the public is over," Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. wrote on Twitter Wednesday.
