$100K Bond For Newport Assault That Left 21-Year-Old In Critical Condition: Cops

A Newport man charged with the felony domestic assault was unable to post $100,000 bond and was jailed.

NEWPORT, RI — A Newport man was charged with felony domestic assault in connection with an attack that left a 21-year-old in critical condition, police said.

Preston Schuster, also 21, was also charged with felony possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, the Newport Police Department said in a media release.

The injured 21-year-old was found at a residence on Carey Street between Spring and Thames streets about 11:30 a.m. Friday and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, according to police.

Another 21-year-old was taken into custody and questioned Friday, police said.

Schuster was arraigned at the Newport police station by a justice of the peace and his bond was set at $100,000, according to the release.

"Mr. Schuster was unable to post $100,000bail and was transported" to the Adult Correctional Institutions, the release said.

Schuster arraignment in Newport District Court was scheduled for Tuesday, according to the release.
