NEWPORT, RI — Two additional open-road tolling lanes have been added to the Pell Bridge in Newport as part of the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority's ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic. One lane has been added in each direction, allowing access to the Conanicus Avenue exit.

Starting in March, the department closed the cash collection booths at the toll plaza from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. During those times, drivers are directed to the open road tolling lanes. Those who do not have an EZ Pass transponder will be mailed a bill based on a photo of the vehicle's license plate. Tolls can be paid online, through the mail, over the phone Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-743-9727 or delivered off in-person at the dropbox outside the office in Jamestown.

The new open road tolling lanes are at the outer edge of each side, one going in each direction. The new lanes allow local traffic, emergency responders and RIPTA buses access to the Conanicus Avenue exit at all times.

The RITBA office remains closed at this time. The department is working to outfit the facility to meet the state government's reopening standards to keep staff and visitors safe. In the meantime, the department is encouraging Rhode Islanders to sign up for EZ Pass online or at an AAA location.
