2022 Hurricane Season Expected To Be Very Active: What To Know In RI
Accuweather predicted another busy year of hurricane and tropical storms in the Atlantic.
RHODE ISLAND — Rhode Island could be in for another active hurricane season, according to Accuweather's newly released season forecast. The last few years have been more active than usual in the Atlantic, and that trend is expected to continue in 2022.
Accuweather said that 2020 was "extraordinarily active," setting a record with 30 named storms. Last year had 21 named storms, the third most on record and the second year in a row that meteorologists had to use the full list of designated storm names.
This year's forecast predicts 16 to 20 named storms, with six to eight hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes. Between four and six hurricanes are expected to have directed impacts on the United States, Accuweather said.

While hurricane season doesn't officially kick off until June 1, tropical depressions and storms have developed in the Atlantic ahead of that date for the past seven years in a row, Accuweather said, prompting the National Hurricane Center to consider pushing the start date back to May 15.
