21-Year-Old Found In Critical Condition In Newport, Possibly Assaulted: Cops

A man was in custody and being questioned, police said.

NEWPORT, RI — A 21-year-old man was in custody and being questioned in connection with a possible assault that left another 21-year-old in critical condition.

The injured 21-year-old was found at a residence on Carey Street between Spring and Thames streets about 11:30 a.m. Friday and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, the Newport Police Department said in a media release.

"A 21-year-old Newport man was taken into custody and is being questioned in regards to this
incident," according to the release, which was issued shortly after 3:30 p.m.

The public was not in danger, according to the release

"We want to reassure the community that this is an isolated incident and there was no threat to public safety," the release said.
