Another Day Of Wildfire Smoke In RI: See Where, How Much

Air quality is unhealthy in Rhode Island again Thursday, and there may be some issues Friday, state environmental officials say.

Rhode Island and other New England states have escaped the orange-glow smoke inundation seen in New York City and Philadelphia, but the air will still be hazy throughout the day.

RHODE ISLAND — With wildfires continuing to burn in Canada and no relief in sight, smoke will continue to linger in the air across the Northeast Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Rhode Island and other New England states have escaped the orange-glow smoke inundation seen in New York City and Philadelphia, but the air will still be hazy throughout the day.

"Unfortunately, another air quality alert is being issued for unhealthy fine particles for Thursday, June 8, as smoke will continue to impact the state," a spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said. "The fires continue and favorable flows continue to direct heavy smoke plumbs towards RI. However, the heaviest smoke should be to our west. For Friday, the heaviest smoke will shift to the west, but there is some evidence it may be wrapping around an area of low pressure into Rhode Island. We'll deal with Friday as we get closer, but smoke will most likely be an issue with elevated fine particles."

As of Thursday, all three of Rhode Island's air quality monitoring stations show an unhealthy level of fine particles.

As of Thursday morning, the Quebec wildfires had burned across nearly 10 million acres in what is shaping up to be Canada's worst spring wildfire season ever. A dry, hot weather pattern is helping to keep the fires burning, according to fire officials.
