Cats Rescued From Newport Home: RISPCA

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says 18 cats were rescued from a Kay Street home on Wednesday.

NEWPORT, RI — A Kay Street resident was hoarding cats, according to the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Animal control officers and the RISPCA raided the house on Wednesday. They found 26 dead cats in a freezer in her home. They also found 18 living cats in difficult circumstances. Those cats were rescued, and all of them should survive. Eight were taken to the RI SPCA shelter, and 10 went to the Potter League.

According to the RISPCA's webpage, no information is being released yet about the Newport woman who was hoarding the animals. But criminal charges are expected. Several photographs on the site show the cats inside the home. One cat is sitting on pipes in the cellar, while another is in bed. A group of cats is sitting on a tabletop in a room.

The raid happened around noon.
