Daily Lane Closures for Newport Pell Bridge Repairs through November
Day construction and activities will begin on Sept. 27, necessitating lane closures in both directions.

NEWPORT, RI—Maintenance work on the Newport Pell Bridge will result in lane closures on weekdays through the fall, according to the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority.
Work on the first phase of the Pell repair project began today with overnight work between 8 p.m. 5:30 a.m. Day construction and maintenance work begins Tuesday, Sept. 27 and will require closures in both east and westbound lanes each week Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Those closures include eastbound open road tolling lanes for two weeks beginning Sept. 27.

"The Authority apologizes for any inconvenience the construction and maintenance activities may cause drivers during their commutes," a press release stated.
The work is part of the authority's $223 million 10-year capital plan approved by its board of directors last month.
The Newport Pell bridge will consume 52 percent of that money, most of which used for bridge deck repairs. The 47-year-old deck "has outlived its originally predicted useful life," the authority said.
Crews will be conducting various operations including bridge joint repairs this fall.
