February Vacation 2022: Things To Do In Rhode Island

Despite the cold weather, there are plenty of fun things to do in Rhode Island during school vacation.

RHODE ISLAND — School vacation week for most Rhode Island students runs from Feb. 21 to 25, and while the weather may not be as beach-ready as July, there are still plenty of fun things for families to do. Here's a look at some fun activities you can take part in during the next week, both indoors and outside.

Roger Williams Park Zoo and Carousel Village

The zoo usually operates from Thursday to Monday, but has extended hours during school vacation weeks. During the week, it will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, timed-entry tickets are still required for non-members.

All month long, the zoo is offering half-priced admission through the "Winter Wonder Days" promotion.

Providence Children's Museum

The museum will be open for extended hours during school vacation. The museum will be open every day from Feb. 19 to 27. Tickets are available for two play sessions, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum closes daily from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Tickets must be reserved in advance, and can be purchased online.

Masks are required for all visitors aged two years and up.


Hiking

Hiking off-season allows a different perspective of some of Rhode Island's greatest landmarks. Before hitting the trail, remember to dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes to protect feet and ankles on potentially slippery trails. Yawgoo Valley

Snow tubing and skiing are available at the Exeter winter sports park. Tubing is available weekly from Friday through Sunday. During school vacation week, the skiing area will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.


Providence Skating Rink/Ice Bumper Cars

Downtown Providence's BankNewport City Center is one of just three ice rinks in the country to offer ice bumper cars. Rides are 20 minutes long and cost $12 to $15. Reservations are required, as spaces fill up quickly, and all riders must fill out a waiver. Both can be completed online.

The rink also offers ice skating. Rates are available on the rink's website.


United Skates of America

Open skate sessions are available throughout the week, with drop-in lessons for kids, laser tag, pizza nights and more. Check the schedule in advance to see when the rink is open. Special events will be held during the day throughout February vacation week.

Non-skating chaperones will be charged $5 each. Skate rentals cost $4.50 or $5 for rollerblades.


Launch Trampoline Park

The facility will offer a special camp for ages 5 through 12, with weekly and daily sessions available.

Launch expanded its offerings during the pandemic, adding a bowling alley and other new activities, along with the previous trampoline area, laser tag and "American Ninja Warrior" style courses.


Newport Mansions

The historic properties of the Preservation Society of Newport County make for a fun peek into the past. All visitors aged 5 and up must show proof of vaccination, and those aged 12 and up must show proof of a booster shot, if eligible.

Two houses, The Breakers and Marble House, are currently open daily, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special tours geared towards children are available at both houses, available with the price of admission. Strollers are not allowed inside the properties.
