New Pickleball Complex Replacing Middletown Movie Theater

Co-owners John Theberge and Chuck Irving promise the new complex will be "a game-changer for the region's thriving pickleball community."

MIDDLETOWN, RI — The same week that news broke Island Cinemas 10 in Middletown will close permanently, a new business is getting ready to take its place, and it is going to make fans of pickleball happy.

Co-owners John Theberge and Chuck Irving have promised the new indoor courts will be "a game-changer for the region's thriving pickleball and recreation community." According to the owners, the facility will feature 11 indoor courts with noise controls, a dedicated space for private events, a lounge area serving refreshments.

"We are thrilled to bring this world-class pickleball facility to Aquidneck Island," Theberge said. "Our goal is to create a hub for the island community, where players can come together year-round to enjoy this hugely popular, multi-generational sport, and forge lasting connections in the community through our social and entertainment events."

Newport Pickleball's owners hope to open the complex during summer 2024. The opening is expected to include exhibitions, food trucks, friendly matches, group clinics, youth and kid camps, and more.

"Newport Pickleball is more than just a sports venue, it's a space where the community can gather, have fun, and stay active," Irving said. "We believe this will contribute to the enormous demand for noise-controlled court space and enhance Aquidneck Island's social fabric and local entertainment options, which are world-class."
