In the face of imminent financial challenges and promising long-term economic opportunities, it's disheartening that not all Newport city council members are embracing the call for collective action. Instead, at least one council member, Councilor Napolitano, seems fixated on settling scores with the Newport Democratic City Committee.

In a recent incident captured on a live stream videotape, Napolitano's words revealed a troubling focus on making lives miserable for members of the Newport Democratic City Committee, dismissing them as the "phoniest group" she's ever met. This pattern of vindictive behavior, familiar to her challengers, must end. It's time for Newport to move beyond this divisive, passive approach to governing.

With thirty-three years in office, Napolitano's tenure has seen its share of controversies. The city is now at a critical juncture, demanding serious-minded active leadership. Fortunately, there's a new crop of council members addressing long-neglected issues such as failing city infrastructure, a housing crisis, short-term rentals, public schools, waterfront over-development, and traffic congestion.

These fresh faces bring a dynamic energy, analytical thinking, and contagious optimism to their roles. They actively engage with the public through various media, welcoming new voices at civic meetings and challenging the status quo. Unlike their predecessors, they aren't beholden to deep-pocketed special interests that exploit our city's international brand at every turn.

Importantly, the new council members are actively pursuing long-term opportunities in the city's North End, aiming to diversify our seasonal economy. As we enter 2024, a pivotal election year, crucial decisions loom that will impact our finances, community values, and future generations.

It's evident that Newport needs a government reboot. The entrenched old guard, in power for decades, has left us with mounting bills. As election season approaches, let's carefully analyze each candidate and bid farewell to those who no longer add value.
Newport badly deserves leaders who prioritize the city's well-being over personal vendettas. Keep that in mind as the incumbents emerge from their hibernation and come knocking for your donations and votes.
