Newport Residents Reminded To Keep Drains Clear This Fall
Even a thin layer of leaves and prevent a drain from working properly.

NEWPORT, RI — As the leaves change color and start to fall, the city of Newport reminded residents of the importance of keeping storm drains clear. Since there are more than 2,500 catch basins throughout the city, the Department of Utilities asked residents to pitch in and make sure those adjacent to houses or businesses are clear of leaves and other debris.
The Water Pollution Control Division is tasked with inspecting, cleaning and repairing Newport's catch basins. In the fall, keeping them all clear is a "daunting task," the city said.
The free-flowing catch basins help keep streets clear of pooled water when it rains, as well as keep pollutants from running off into Newport Harbor. Even just a thin layer of leaves can cause blockages that stop effective draining, the city said.

Residents interested in helping keep drains clear are asked to only do so if it is safe. That means watching out for traffic, and avoiding drains in the middle of the street. Instead, only clean drains at the curb, from the sidewalk rather than standing in the road.
Because drain covers are extremely heavy, the city asked residents not to lift them.

When clearing the drains, only remove surface debris like leaves. Leave trash, larger debris or anything inside the drains to city employees. If the drain is still clogged after cleaning, call the Department of Utilities at 845-5600.
