NEWPORT, RI — Newport city officials are looking for volunteers to serve on a special ad-hoc revenue review committee.

With some of the highest property values in the state alongside one of the lowest tax rates in Rhode Island, Newport’s ability to balance the needs of its residents with the growing cost of services has relied on the city’s ability to deploy creative and user-driven sources of revenue, according to city officials. From harbor levies and parking revenue to tourist and hospitality related fees, Newport’s general fund comprises a number of income streams beyond its local tax base.

In an effort to provide additional relief to residents, the Newport Ad-Hoc Revenue Review Committee will be charged with taking a fresh look at the city's existing revenue streams and offer up proposals for new or expanded ways to bring in funds outside of local property taxes.

The last time the city council convened a similar commission was in 2013-14, when the committee was asked to provide recommendations for streamlining Newport government and seeking out alternative forms of revenue. The review committee — which will consist of eight members, including five resident volunteers and three senior city staff members — will look to continue that work.

Volunteers with a background in finance, accounting, insurance, or economics are encouraged to apply beginning through the city’s online talent bank.

Recommendations from the committee are expected to be presented to the Council by next summer, city officials said.
